The peak can be seen to move from one side of 1420 MHz to the other side – this is because the telescope line of site is towards the side of the Milky Way moving towards us, and at other times away from us. The moving frequency of the signal is due to Doppler shift as the Milky Way is rotating and the hydrogen is therefore travelling relative to ourselves as observers.
