Process for installation on a your PC – this PC will be wiped by this process so ensure it does not contain data you wish to preserve. This image was created using Active@ Disc Imager. This is a paid programme but does have a free trial version, although you may need the paid version to create the Active@ Imager boot disc. We have no relationship to Active@ Disc Imager as a company other than that software was used to create the image.
I am very grateful to Andrew Sutkowski for allowing others to access his disc image.
You will need 2 x blank USB Pendrives 256 GB in size for this installation. You will also need access to a Windows PC for the first part of this process. The computer where you intend to install the Ubuntu disc image must have at least 256 GB hard disc.
Process for installation:
(i) Install Active@ Disc Imager on a Windows PC (it is Windows software only). (https://www.disk-image.com/index.html)
(ii) Use Microsoft Windows Media Creation Tool to create a Windows installation USB Pendrive (we will call this Pendrive 1) (https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11 or https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10). Active@ Disc Imager requires the Windows environment on this disc for its Active@ boot disc, which will boot Active@ on your Ubuntu machine to install the Ubuntu disc image.
(iii) Use Active@ Disc Imager on the Windows PC to create the Active@ Disc Imager boot disc on USB Pendrive 1 (after completing (ii) above first). There is a button for this purpose in Active@ Disc Imager.
(iv) Download Andrew Sutkowski’s Ubuntu image from URL below onto the Windows PC.
https://files.ad.thornett.net/astronet/SuthowskiDiscImage081025.zip
(v) Use Active@ Disc Imager on Windows PC to install this image onto a 2nd pendrive (USB Pendrive 2).
(vi) You now have 2 x pendrives – Pendrive 1 containing the Active@ Disc Imager Installer Boot Disc, and Pendrive 2 containing Andrew Sutkowski’s Ubuntu disc image containing GNU Radio, SDR Play support, ezRA, radio-astro.
(v) Now you are ready to install the Ubuntu image on your Ubuntu PC – remember this process will wipe this PC and you will lose all data and software on it.
(vi) Insert USB Pendrive 1 into the USB port on the 2nd machine. Restart the machine repeatedly pressing F2/F10/Esc or whatever button is required on your computer to enter the one-time boot menu in the bios. An alternative is to go into the bios and change the boot order so that USB comes first. Select the USB option with Active@ Disc Imager from the list that appears. This should now allow you to start Active@ Disc Imager boot disc on the new (soon-to-be) Ubuntu machine.
(vii) Insert USB Pendrive 2 with the Ubuntu disc image into the Ubuntu machine.
(viii) When Active@ Disc Imager appears, it will prompt you to select source of the disc image. Select USB Pendrive 2.
(ix) This should now install the disc image on this new computer.
