Free dictation software on different platforms

Yes. There are several free options that will transcribe your speech into text as you dictate:

Smartphones

  • Google Docs (Android and iPhone)
    • Open a document and tap the microphone on the keyboard.
    • Free and surprisingly accurate.
    • Available on many Android devices.
    • Records audio and creates a searchable transcript automatically.
  • Apple Notes
    • On iPhone, tap the microphone on the keyboard while editing a note.
    • Uses Apple’s built-in speech recognition.

Windows PCs

  • Windows Voice Typing
    • Press Windows + H.
    • Start speaking and text appears wherever the cursor is.
    • Included free with modern Windows versions.

Linux

  • Free, open-source, runs locally.
  • Based on OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition model.
  • Good for privacy because recordings stay on your computer.
  • Free and works offline.
  • Available for Linux, Windows, and Raspberry Pi.

For long interviews or lectures

  • Free tier available.
  • Provides live transcription and speaker identification.
  • Monthly limits apply on the free plan.

My recommendation

Since you use Linux and Raspberry Pi systems, Whisper.cpp is probably the best free solution. It works offline, has excellent accuracy, and can transcribe either live dictation or recorded audio files.
